“Baseball Pioneers” Weekend: Women in Baseball
August 25, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Join us for a day of celebrating women in baseball!
Award-winning filmmaker Jon Leonoudakis, creator of The Sweet Spot: A Treasury of Baseball Stories TV show on Amazon Prime will present his latest project from the series, Shutout! The Battle American Women Wage to Play Baseball
The film chronicles over a century of gender discrimination that continues today, along with celebrating women who’ve impacted the landscape of the game and considering the path forward to create more opportunities for girls and women to play, coach, and umpire at any level.
Shutout! Features perspectives from pioneers like Cleveland’s Justine Siegal, the first women to be hired as a coach by a Major League team (A’s) as well as the first to pitch batting practice to an MLB team (Indians). She’s joined by Ila Borders, the first woman to receive a college athletic scholarship for baseball, umpire Perry Barber, along with women from the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and many more.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session and a book signing of Jon’s new book, Baseball Pioneers. The book has a unique take on the subject, as four of the six pioneers presented are women! Baseball Pioneers features a foreword by legendary writer Arnold Hano (A Day in the Bleachers) along with plenty of photos from the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Center for History, the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Negro Leagues Museum.
