This program offers an engaging introduction to the remarkable life of Larry Doby, a pioneering athlete who helped reshape the landscape of American sports. Participants will explore his journey from the Negro Leagues to becoming the first Black player in the American League, his achievements on and off the field, and his enduring impact on baseball and civil rights. Through storytelling, historical context, and interactive discussion, this program highlights Doby’s resilience, talent, and the powerful legacy he left for future generations.
Mary Manning, Ph.D., is the PK-12 Education Manager, YEE Project Director, and Region 3 Ohio History Day Coordinator at the Cleveland History Center of the Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS). Prior to joining WRHS in 2017, she spent two years stationed at the Oberlin Heritage Center as an AmeriCorps Member in the Ohio History Service Corps, helping Cleveland-area history organizations refine and expand their operations. She received her B.A. in Art History and French from Case Western Reserve University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
